Your school board campaign is a part of large organized team of dedicated individuals.  Successful campaigns are the product of an organized and motivated team working together.  While you may be the candidate, it is the effort of the volunteers along with you that is the key to winning.  Working now to identify the key volunteers will allow the campaign team to focus on getting votes as you get closer to the election.

While beginning the organization phase, it is important to understand that one person cannot handle all the work of a campaign.  That includes you, the candidate.  In the enthusiasm of the run, it is easy to stretch yourself too thin.  You are a resource – a limited resource – and should focus your energy on meeting voters and raising the necessary money to win the election.  Forming committees and appointing chairpersons can be a way to lessen the load.

    ORDER CAMPAIGN MATERIAL...... top

Summer is a busy time and a good time to order a few campaign items so you will have them on hand.  First and foremost, you should consider purchasing palm cards to hand out to voters throughout your campaign.  That gives each person you meet an opportunity to read why you are running and will give them a visual of your name to increase your recognition.  Next, you should purchase your yard signs, 4 x 8’s, and lapel stickers.  Check out www.RUNandWIN.com as a good source for these materials.  Basically you should purchase all of your materials besides newspaper ads and mail pieces at this time.

GET YOUR ANNOUNCEMENT IN THE NEWSPAPER..... top

Get some free publicity by introducing yourself to your newspaper.  The local newspaper will more than likely run a nice story about your announcement and give you free publicity, otherwise known as earned media.   The paper may decide to interview you or have you prepare the basic article.

If you haven’t made photos of yourself, you will need to have some done for this.  Photos will be needed for palm cards and mailings.  Take some headshots as well as some action photo.  Get a professional photographer to take photos or get a friend who is a semi-professional. You can get great photos nowadays with just a good digital photos and they will be easy to have for your palm cards.  It is always useful to have some photos of yourself with your family as well as you with kids.
